Kevin Culver Smith was our beloved son, brother, and friend and the champion of the world. Kevin was born on March 24, 1994 in Seattle and moved to Olympia, WA at age 3. Kevin loved his family, his friends, skiing, biking, swimming, wearing costumes, Toys-R-Us, searching for bugs, charades, and reading everything in sight. He played soccer, baseball, and basketball and loved to fish with his Dad.
He became ill on the last day of second grade and was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. He spent the summer in-patient at Seattle Children’s Hospital and endured tortuous chemotherapy, stays in the ICU, and eventually a stem cell transplant. Throughout his treatment, he inspired us - and his wonderful Children's Hospital nurses -- by maintaining a constantly positive attitude.
He passed away peacefully with family at his side on December 22, 2002 due to Leukemia-related complications. We are incredibly proud of him and feel blessed to have shared his 8 years. We will think about him, the example he set, his sense of humor, and his beautiful smile every day of our lives.
Kevin loved to order pizza and ice cream cakes for the nurses and was a friend to kids who did not have an easy time at school.
Kevin’s parents, Matt and Nancy Smith, and his siblings Will, Emma, and Henry have established this fund to give to others facing challenges, that their paths may be a little easier and their loads a little lighter.

The Kevin Culver Smith Fund is a charitable fund that provides grants to public charities that provide support for caregivers, seriously ill children, and families experiencing trauma and poverty. The goal of the Kevin Culver Smith Fund is to help fill gaps in services for vulnerable families.
When families experience trauma, serious illness, dislocation, or poverty, family and community resources fall short. The goal of the Kevin Culver Smith Fund is to help fill in the gaps that occur when families face adversity and family resources are strained. Our philosophy is that by “caring for caregivers” we can enhance the quality of life for families as they deal with major life issues. By filling in these gaps, we enhance quality of life for the community as a whole.
To continue the legacy of Kevin Culver Smith by providing funding for charitable organizations serving caregivers and families in the greater Portland, OR area.
Our Mission
Grants
The Kevin Culver Smith fund provides grants up to $5,000 from public charities (501(3)(c) that provide services for caregivers, seriously ill children, families experiencing poverty, and families that have experienced trauma. The Kevin Culver Smith Fund provides grants by invitation only at this time. The Kevin Culver Smith fund provides grants to organizations that meet the following criteria:
- Documentation that a high percentage of funding resources go directly to families and individuals being served
- Documented Non-Discrimination policies and practices within the organization
- A track record of service in Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington Counties
